Brian Mansfield is in the playlist spotlight this week on USAtoday.com, and our erstwhile country critic shows off his impressive breadth of taste by picking Britney Spears at the top of the list and plenty of eclectic choices elsewhere.

If you don’t know the name of the band, you know the song. Take this as my memorial day gift to you. The best music for summer. Download it, dance to it, do whatever teenagers are doing these days.

Today’s Actual Quote comes from the Website of the Band The Orion Experience, who play tonight at Mercury Lounge:
The eclectic quintet, fronted by former Kitty in the Tree singer Orion Simprini, is fresh on the scene. Having formed in January 2005 their eager excitement explodes from each track on the debut album. Their carefree, positive vibe recalls late ’60s and early ’70s songwriting, spiked with sweet harmonies and toe-tapping beats. If The Orion Experience doesn’t make you want to leap from your chair and dance, you might want to check …

When I go to any concert, if I’ve never heard of the opening band, I am fully prepared for them to suck. It’s the subtle band-playing-order-ism of lowered expectations (Bing Crosby said that). This goes double for indie bands in small New Jersey venues. Imagine my surprise, then, when Los Campesinos opener The Orion Experience was freaking amazing! I’m just disappointed that their album came out in 2007, disqualifying me from writing about it in my Best Music of 2008 series. Check ‘em out anyways, you guys. They’re good.

We LOVE this song. It’s really one of the best, cheerful pop songs we’ve heard in a really long time…it rivals Alphabeat in cheeriness and catchiness (don’t worry, in our minds, nothing can actually touch Alphabeat). It’s called Obsessed With You and it’s by NY band The Orion Experience. Any song that spells out words in a cute, catchy melody is a winner in our book! Really, we implore you to brighten your day and listen to the song below. You can download their album “Cosmicandy”, filled with lots of …

You think living in this area for eight years, that I would know or at least heard of every popular New York indie band. Then you come across The Orion Experience, and they’ve been around since 2005. Even through they are local, they sound more Californian, with the nods to sunny mid-60s bubble gum pop. Mix that with some modern indie rock, even a little ska pop and you get their sound. I caught a handful of songs and some of it fun.

Presenting The Orion Experience: one of New York City’s best hidden gems. well, i call them a hidden gem but after being featured on celebrity gossip site and wannabe music know-it-all PerezHilton.com, i’m not sure how long that will last. regardless, their music remains by far the most catchy i’ve had the pleasure of hearing in a blue moon. it’s quite literally like candy for the ears… and soul for that matter.

The song is named Obsessed With You, and we’re obsessed with it!
An indie pop gem, the tune is from a New York group named The Orion Experience.
The chorus is so damn hooky and the back and forth vocals from the male singer and female backup vocalist just takes the tune over the top.
Enjoy the double yum Obsessed With You below. And then CLICK HERE to check out some other songs from The Orion Experience!
